Scarlet Frills Mustard Seed Highlights
- Germination: 1 to 3 days
- Soak: No need.
- Harvest: 8Â to 30 days for microgreens – can allow it to grow into baby greens (up to 25+ days)
- Flavor: Very spicy, bold mustard flavor.
- Nutrients: Vitamins A, C, E, K, and antioxidants.
These mustard microgreens can be harvested at an early cotyledon stage or grown as long as possible in a microgreen tray.
The results will differ in shape and color but not spiciness! Scarlet Frills Mustard microgreens are spicy with a bold mustard flavor, even at an early stage.
You can see all of the variation in the frilly true leaves of this microgreen. I couldn’t stop putting photos on the product page. Some are red & white variegated, other are pure dark red, many are streaked. I can’t tell the difference between Scarlet Frills Mustard and Ruby Streaked Mustard.
I think they are close to the same sub-variety but produced by different growers.
This mustard is great to use fresh in spring rolls, sandwiches, stir fry, or dishes where you want some spice.
Harvest these microgreens between days 6 and 30 for a zing on sandwiches or in salads.
The flavor is the same as the microgreens mature, but the texture will change. I prefer to eat them as the first true leaves form. They aren’t nearly up to full color yet, but they’re more tender.
Control the spicy flavor by adjusting how many microgreens you add to your dish.
You can plant Scarlet Frills Mustard Seed in the garden, where these fantastic colored plants become deep red and frilly.
Some photos are of Scarlet Frills Mustard grown in my garden, so you can see what mature Scarlet Frills Mustard looks like as a mature vegetable.

In the Garden
This mustard does well in the garden too! It is very spicy. You can see how beautiful the frilly leaves become as they get older. There is a photo of a bunch of this mustard I grew in the garden in the gallery above.
