What is a Good Potting Mix?

There are several potting mixes that I recommend. Of course, I believe, and the head-to-head trials I have run show that the Home Microgreens Potting Mix is one of the best.

Other potting mixes I recommend are:

Home Microgreens Potting Mix

At Home Microgreens we take another great blended potting mix from Bio 365 and add more great natural amendments to it creating an awesome mix that grows great microgreens and holds water content very well.

Coconut Coir over Peat Moss

I believe that coconut coir is a much better media for microgreens than peat moss. You can check out of the soil articles I have published working with microgreens for my reasoning. I also think that coconut coir is much more renewable than peat moss is too. I have some articles on potting mixes and amendments under the gardening section of Home Microgreens if you want more information on that topic.

That said, coconut coir, or peat moss for that matter, are not great growing media for microgreens by itself. Both coir and peat moss are nutrient inert.

You need to add soil amendments or use a fertilizer if you want to use coir or peat moss by itself. More on this and fertilizers in the Fundamental Microgreen Growing Course (being worked on).

Fertilizer?

No where in this course will you hear me discuss adding any fertilizer to our microgreens or water. That is because if you use Home Microgreens Potting mix or any of the other recommended potting mixes you will not need to use any. For some of the longer growing microgreens it can’t hurt and more will be discussed in the Fundamental Microgreen Growing Course.

Currently there are two fertilizers I recommend. They are Ocean Solution and Hero Plant Food. But as I said, you will not need fertilizer in most cases if you use a good potting mix.

Secondary Containment Trays

Rubbermade Food Storage Box

This commercial food storage box is 18″ by 12″ by 3-1/2″ and would be perfect to use to fill Home Microgreens Trays

Pizza Dough Tray

This is like the green tray you saw me use in the video. It works great for multiple trays or 1020 trays. I have three or four of them and find uses all the time for them. They are 26″ by 18″ by 3″. I love them!

How to Correctly Store Potting Mix

Like anything, if you buy in larger quantities the unit price is less. So it makes sense to buy larger bags of soil if you are going to grow a lot of microgreens.

But you can run into problems storing soil if you aren’t careful. Plus, keeping it in the bag will only lead to spills and messes. I have published an article that shows how I store potting mix and what container I use that stores it well and helps me keep the place a lot cleaner.
