What Seeds Need Soaking
Usually larger hard seeds like peas and buckwheat, or seeds that can have mold problems like sunflower to get them a head start.
However, information on what seeds need or should be soaked is mixed on the internet. There is a lot of dogma that is continually repeated. My rule of thumb is if someone is telling you how to grow a microgreen they should have their own photos of the process.
That way you can see the results as they discuss the process. All of my articles have photos of the growing process, so if I say the seeds can grow without soaking or that you need to soak the seeds you can look at my photos to see how well they grew.
Articles
All of my how to grow articles show the process and discuss if the seeds need to be soaked. The best way to search for the microgreen you are growing is to go to the article directory. You can find it in the sub-menu of the Article tab on the website header.
Here is a link to the article directory, them search for your microgreen in the Table of Contents and the page will move to those articles.
Home Microgreen Store Product Page
The product page of each microgreen seed in the Home Microgreens Store has information listed if the seeds need to be soaked. See the examples below.

*Side Note
See the words “Seeding Density” below the word description? If you click that and make it active you can see the preferred seeding density for stock size trays. if you have odd size trays or want a quick reference don’t forget about the HM Seed Density Course or the Patron Membership.

Home Microgreen Store
Besides having seeds, supplies, and equipment the Home Microgreen Store also has a ton of information on microgreens.
Equipment Shown in the Video
Below is a listing of the equipment shown in the video. I also included the seed measuring spoons I have available if you want to buy bulk seed and use the seed density information I provide to does out the seed for your trays. The spoons have vertical sides and are more accurate than cooking measuring spoons. Buying in bulk will save you quite a bit of money.
The measuring spoons measure consistently. I have checked them using a gram scale. As long as you fill the spoons level to the top with seeds they scoop out a precise number of seeds.
250 mL Measuring Cup with Pour Spout
We spread microgreen seeds with this 250 mL measuring cup. The pour spout directs seeds where they need to go.

Most people have a spray bottle at home, I know I do, but I never remember what was in it prior. As I said in the video, these small 8-oz spray bottles have a nice misting pattern. The smaller size is easier to handle even if you have to fill it more often.
The shaker bottle is a spice jar with 3/16-inch diameter holes. You can probably source that from your kitchen. However, I find myself using the measuring cup more and more for spreading microgreen seeds. The little spout does a good job distributing the seeds.
Microgreen Seed Shaker Bottle
A microgreen seed shaker bottle makes it so much easier to spread seeds evenly on your soil media.
The four-ounce volume shaker bottle is 4.1″ long and is 1.5″ in diameter. The cap has three holes with a diameter of 0.2″.
